A Rising Athletic Career Cut Short
Barnett, a junior business administration student, was a prominent figure within the William Jewell football program. A native of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, he was the son of Michelle Barnett and Felix Lora and one of seven siblings. Before joining the Cardinals, he established himself as a standout athlete at Liberty North High School, where he earned All-Conference and All-State honors and helped lead his team to a state championship.
His collegiate career saw him emerge as a key offensive player for the NCAA Division II team. After playing in eight games during his freshman year, he started five contests the following season before a significant injury sidelined him. His return to the field for the 2026 season opener was marked by his early touchdown, making his subsequent collapse on the sidelines particularly devastating for his teammates and coaches.

Following the medical emergency, William Jewell College suspended the game. In an official statement, the institution expressed its condolences to the family, students, and the broader football community. College President Dr. Dave Van Horn publicly acknowledged the efforts of the first responders and the hospital staff who attempted to treat Barnett during the crisis.
