More than 200,000 individuals have contributed $100,000 each to expedite the processing of H-1B visa applications.

Markeayne Mullin, the Secretary of Homeland Security for the United States, stated that by paying the supplementary fee, applicants could expect their applications to be processed in approximately 15 days.

More than 200,000 individuals have opted to pay the $100,000 application fee for the H-1B visa, enabling expedited processing of their applications, according to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markeayne Mullin. During a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Mullin revealed that this additional fee has significantly reduced the processing time to approximately 15 days. He noted that out of 286,000 applicants for H-1B visas this year, over 200,000 chose to pay the fee to facilitate quicker processing.

Mullin explained that the expedited process allows the department to streamline applications, stating, "When we do that, we're able to process them in about 15 days, because we're able to throw stuff out." In contrast, the remaining 80,000 applicants face a much longer wait, with processing times extending to around 7.5 months as they seek exemptions from the visa application fee.

The discussion arose after Senator Susan Collins of Maine raised concerns about the impact of the $100,000 fee on rural healthcare facilities. She highlighted a specific case involving a hospital in Presque Isle, Maine, which struggled to hire a much-needed surgeon due to the financial burden of the fee. Collins urged Mullin to consider exemptions for rural communities that can demonstrate a lack of available medical professionals.

"While I can understand why the administration might consider assigning fees to H-1B visas in the tech area, that's not what we're talking about when it's medical providers for rural areas," Collins emphasized. Mullin acknowledged the challenges of creating specific exemptions but did not commit to any changes.

The $100,000 H-1B visa application fee was introduced by the Trump administration in September 2022, aiming to discourage U.S. companies from hiring foreign workers over American talent. H-1B visas are typically granted for three years, with the possibility of a three-year extension. The annual cap for H-1B visas is set at 65,000, with an additional 20,000 allocated for applicants holding advanced degrees. Notably, over 70% of approved H-1B visas are awarded to professionals from India.
