United States President
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, President Trump described the pair as highly capable negotiators. While he confirmed that the envoys are carrying a specific plan to address the war, he declined to provide details regarding whether the proposal includes the potential cession of Ukrainian territory, a concept he has referenced in previous public remarks. He maintained that the administration has a clear vision for peace and expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement.
Diplomatic Mission and Proposed Ceasefire
This upcoming visit represents the first time Kushner and Witkoff have traveled to Kyiv since President Trump assumed office with a stated commitment to conclude the war. Both men have previously conducted visits to Moscow. The President attributed the origins of the conflict, which began with the Russian invasion in February 2022, to a personal friction between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In response to the diplomatic initiative, President Zelensky announced that he has proposed a reciprocal ceasefire to coincide with the envoys' visits. In an evening address, Zelensky stated that Ukraine would refrain from conducting airstrikes and called for Russia to provide similar assurances, ensuring a pause in hostilities for the duration of the talks.
Regional Security and NATO Relations
During his remarks, President Trump also addressed concerns regarding broader regional security, specifically dismissing recent allegations from Germany that Russia was responsible for an attempted drone strike on a German airport. The President stated that he maintains regular communication with the Russian leadership and asserted his belief that President Putin does not intend to target NATO territory.
