A resident of Staten Island, New York, has survived a rare and harrowing lightning strike that occurred just steps from his home.
In the video, Fahmy is seen walking toward his car before suddenly collapsing to the ground. Despite the intensity of the strike, he remained conscious throughout the ordeal. He later described the experience as an overwhelming physical shock, noting that he felt immediate pain, numbness, and a severe burning sensation radiating through his body and into his feet. After the strike, he managed to stand up and move toward a neighbor’s home to request assistance.
Recovery and Medical Assessment
Following the incident, a neighbor, Stephanie Homan, reported hearing cries for help and discovered Fahmy on the ground. He was subsequently transported to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital for observation. Remarkably, medical professionals determined that he had sustained no burns or significant internal injuries. He was monitored overnight and discharged the following day.
Fahmy, who serves as a staff member for U.S. Representative Nicole Malliotakis, has expressed gratitude for his survival. Representative Malliotakis issued a statement on Monday acknowledging the incident, expressing relief that her staff member is safe and extending thanks to the neighbor who provided aid as well as the medical team at the hospital. Reflecting on the event, Fahmy described the experience as a reminder to appreciate life and maintain perspective.
Context of Lightning Incidents
The incident occurs amidst a series of reports regarding lightning strikes across the United States. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that approximately 37 million lightning strikes hit the ground in the country annually, the statistical probability of an individual being struck is estimated at less than one in a million. According to federal health data, nearly 90 percent of individuals who are struck by lightning survive the encounter.
Other recent reports have highlighted the varying outcomes of such strikes, including fatal incidents in Florida and serious injuries reported in Illinois. For Fahmy, the week following his survival has been marked by a return to his routine, including a visit to his church on Sunday and a lighthearted attempt at the lottery on Saturday. He remains in good health following the event.
