Singaporean authorities have launched investigations into five individuals following the emergence of offensive online commentary regarding the recent catastrophic flooding in Nepal and a business investment involving Air India. The police confirmed on Wednesday that they have interviewed five people, aged between 29 and 66, in connection with the reports.
The investigation follows public condemnation from senior government officials regarding the nature of the remarks. Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam previously described the online discourse as shameful and xenophobic, noting that such content has appeared in the wake of the flash floods in Nepal and Tibet, as well as news regarding Singapore Airlines' 25.1 percent stake in Air India.
Government Response to Online Conduct
Minister Shanmugam highlighted specific examples of the rhetoric, which included derogatory language directed at individuals of Indian descent. He emphasized that these comments surfaced even as the death toll from the floods climbed into the thousands and while some Singaporeans remained unaccounted for in the affected regions. The minister stated that the Ministry of Digital Development and Information is working to ensure that social media platforms remove content that violates community guidelines and promotes hostility.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also addressed the situation, warning that Singapore must remain vigilant against the normalization of prejudice. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Prime Minister underscored that while robust public debate is a feature of society, it should not be utilized as a pretext to incite hostility toward specific communities or foreign nationals.
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Stance
The Singapore Police Force stated that they take a firm stance against conduct that threatens to damage racial harmony or incite ill will between different groups. Because the investigation is currently active, officials have declined to provide further details regarding the specific cases or the individuals involved. Authorities have indicated that they will continue their efforts to identify those responsible for the posts.
While officials noted that it remains unclear whether all the authors of the comments are Singaporean citizens, the government has characterized the rhetoric as entirely unacceptable. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities monitor the digital landscape for further breaches of conduct.
