Putin and Modi Highlight BRICS Economic Growth at New Delhi Forum

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pointed to shifting global economic trends, asserting that the BRICS bloc now contributes more to the world economy than the Group of Seven (G7). Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, Putin highlighted what he described as objective data from the past five years, noting that BRICS nations have generated over 40% of global gross domestic product, while the G7’s contribution stands at 29%.

The forum, which serves as the primary private-sector platform for the grouping, was hosted in India ahead of the Leaders' Summit. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded on these figures during his concluding address, stating that BRICS nations now represent 50% of the world's population, 40% of global GDP, and more than 25% of international trade. Modi noted that while global GDP has grown by approximately two-and-a-half times over the last five years, the combined GDP of the BRICS bloc has expanded nearly four-and-a-half times.

Economic Expansion and Diplomatic Engagement

Modi emphasized that the economic strength of the bloc is growing at nearly double the pace of the rest of the world. He described the member nations as emerging hubs for innovation, ranging from grassroots initiatives to frontier technologies. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, speaking at the opening ceremony, stated that India’s chairship of the group has focused on achieving more balanced trade and exploring service-sector expansion to benefit farmers, women, and young entrepreneurs.
