While the council has officially moved to begin the renaming process, the final choice for the new street name remains under consideration. Among the options being discussed are Obama Avenue and Taco Avenue. The latter, according to reports, serves as a reference to a moniker used by some in financial circles to describe the president, based on the acronym for the phrase, "Trump Always Chickens Out."
City Councillor Tim Tierney noted that while Canada features various locations bearing the name "Trump"—including islands, creeks, and lakes—this specific street is the only one in the capital officially named after the U.S. leader. Councillor Riley Brockington, who has been vocal about the issue, stated his intention to collaborate with local residents to finalize the name change following the city’s upcoming October election. Brockington has publicly described the current name of the street as an embarrassment to the community.
Historical Context of the Street Name
The push to rename the street is not a new development. In 2021, the city conducted a survey of the 62 households located on the street to gauge interest in a name change. The results were evenly split, with 21 residents voting in favor, 21 voting against, and 20 households abstaining from the process. The current unanimous council vote suggests a shift in the political appetite for addressing the street's identity.
