Authorities in Nepal have announced a comprehensive security strategy for the Kathmandu Valley ahead of the upcoming festive season, which includes the celebrations of Vijaya Dashami, Deepawali, and Chhath. To maintain public order and safety, approximately 3,500 police personnel will be stationed throughout the region.
The security deployment, confirmed by the Chief of the Kathmandu District Police Range, Dilip Ghimire, will involve a mix of uniformed officers and plainclothes personnel. This initiative aims to address potential security risks during a period typically marked by high public movement and large gatherings.
Focus on Crime Prevention and Public Safety
Police officials have identified several primary security concerns, including theft, robbery, fraud, and public misconduct. Authorities are particularly focused on mitigating incidents of bag snatching at busy intersections and maintaining order in crowded public spaces, such as markets and transport hubs. To support these efforts, security checks at entry points to the valley will be intensified, with the integration of sniffer dogs and expanded surveillance through closed-circuit television cameras.
In addition to the increased physical presence, the Kathmandu District Police Range has released a 13-point safety advisory for residents, particularly those planning to travel to their hometowns. The guidance encourages citizens to secure valuables in bank lockers rather than leaving cash or important documents at home. Furthermore, the public has been cautioned against engaging in gambling or illegal activities and is advised to avoid excessive alcohol consumption that could lead to anti-social behavior or public disturbances.
Digital and Travel Precautions
As part of the broader safety campaign, the police have issued warnings regarding digital security. Consumers making online purchases are urged to exercise vigilance against fraudulent websites, suspicious social media links, and deceptive offers. Travelers have also been advised to remain alert for fake ticketing schemes and to strictly adhere to traffic safety regulations, specifically regarding the dangers of drinking and driving.
The advisory emphasizes the importance of personal safety in crowded environments, urging individuals to keep a close watch on their belongings and to provide extra supervision for children and senior citizens. Additionally, the police have requested that the public refrain from using firecrackers or other hazardous materials during the festivities to prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for all participants.
