One Dead and Over 100 Rescued After Indonesian Ferry Encounters Severe Weather

A passenger vessel navigating the waters between the Indonesian islands of Java and Borneo has been struck by severe weather, leading to a major rescue operation in the Java Sea. Authorities confirmed that one person has died, while 103 passengers and crew members have been successfully evacuated from the ferry, known as the Virgo Transport 8.

The vessel, which was carrying a total of 243 people, lost contact with its operating company early Sunday morning shortly after departing from the port of Surabaya in East Java. Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area, located approximately 150 kilometres from the ship's intended destination of Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

Rescue Operations Amid Hazardous Conditions

I Putu Sudayana, a local search and rescue chief, reported that the recovery efforts have been complicated by dangerous maritime conditions. Rescuers have been forced to navigate through waves reaching heights of up to 2.5 metres. Sudayana noted that the environment remains extremely risky for maritime traffic, stating that even the 40-metre vessels operated by Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency, Basarnas, are facing significant challenges in the rough seas.
