German law enforcement agencies have initiated a terrorism investigation following a series of suspected sabotage attacks on the country's electricity infrastructure. Authorities are currently examining two separate incidents involving substations in eastern and western Germany, both of which utilized pyrotechnic devices to damage power lines and disrupt operations.
The first incident occurred early Tuesday in the state of Brandenburg, near the Polish border. Homemade explosives, described by officials as resembling large fireworks, were fired at a substation in Preilack. The attack resulted in damage to power cables and caused a brief disruption to the electricity supply from the nearby Jaenschwalde plant. In response, police have opened a formal terrorism probe, citing concerns over the destruction of essential equipment and the disruption of public services.
Investigation into Coordinated Sabotage
A second, similar attack took place in Bergheim, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where unknown perpetrators targeted overhead power lines at a substation. Investigators discovered six launchers in a field adjacent to the site, which they believe were used to fire pyrotechnic devices carrying wires over the lines to induce a short circuit. While the incident caused flashes of light and damaged a fence, it did not lead to widespread power outages. However, the operator, RWE, confirmed that five power-generating units at two coal-fired plants were temporarily taken offline as a result of the disruption.
North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul addressed the incidents during a press conference, noting that authorities are investigating whether the attacks were the work of left-wing extremists or directed by a foreign state. Reul emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that such interference is occurring on German soil and represents a broader attempt to strike at the country’s stability. The police have confirmed that they are looking for potential links between the Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia attacks, specifically focusing on the common use of pyrotechnic technology.
Heightened Security and Geopolitical Context
These incidents follow a period of increased vigilance regarding the security of German critical infrastructure. The country has previously experienced attacks on its power grid, some of which have been claimed by far-left militant groups. Simultaneously, government officials remain on high alert for potential sabotage plots linked to foreign actors, particularly given Germany’s role as a significant supporter of Ukraine.
The latest sabotage attempts coincide with a formal announcement from the German government blaming Russia for a separate attempted hybrid attack involving an explosive-laden drone at a strategic airport in Leipzig last month. As a result of that incident, Berlin has already initiated diplomatic counter-measures. Authorities continue to process evidence from both substation attacks as they work to determine the perpetrators and any potential connection between the two events.
