Harold Gene Lucas was convicted in February 1977 of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. The charges stemmed from a shooting incident on August 13, 1976, at a residence in Bonita Springs. Prosecutors stated that Lucas opened fire on 16-year-old Jill Piper and two other individuals, aged 17 and 19, who were present at the home. While Piper was killed, the two other victims survived their injuries.
The legal proceedings surrounding the case were extensive, with the Florida Supreme Court overturning the death sentence four times due to procedural errors. Over the course of the legal battle, Lucas was sentenced to death five times for the same crime. Advocacy groups, including Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, had petitioned Governor DeSantis to commute the sentence. The organization pointed to Lucas's lack of a prior criminal record and his upbringing in an environment marked by violence and substance abuse as factors for consideration.
State Execution Trends
The execution of Lucas is the first in the United States since August 18, when Florida also carried out a lethal injection for William Silvia. The state has maintained a high frequency of capital punishment under Governor DeSantis, who is set to leave office in January. Since taking office in 2019, DeSantis has overseen 42 executions, with 16 warrants signed in 2026 alone. Last year, Florida recorded 19 executions, which set a modern record for the state.
Following this week's events, the state has scheduled two additional executions for September: Daniel Conahan is slated for September 10, and Curtis Beasley is scheduled for September 29.
