Georgia Police Officer Placed on Leave After Shooting Donkey During Search Operation

A Georgia farm owner is seeking justice after a Cedartown police officer shot and killed her pet donkey during a nighttime search operation in Polk County. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, August 30, has prompted an official investigation and the placement of the involved officer on paid administrative leave.

Hannah Israel, the owner of the donkey named HeeHaw, stated that the animal was killed while officers were on her property searching for a missing person. According to Israel, the officers entered her pasture without prior notification or permission. She claims that the animal, which she described as a bottle-raised pet, was shot after officers allegedly attempted to use a taser on him, citing concerns for their safety when the donkey approached them.

Official Investigation and Response

The City of Cedartown confirmed in a public statement that its police department is aware of the shooting. Officials explained that the officer was present at the scene to assist the Polk County Police Department in a search for a missing child. The city noted that the child was eventually located at a nearby church, separate from the pasture where the incident took place.
