A 58-year-old British tourist has been arrested in Turkey following allegations that he disrespected the national flag. The incident reportedly took place in the southern resort town of Alanya, located approximately 130 kilometres east of Antalya, after the individual became involved in a confrontation with hotel employees.
According to reports from local news agencies, the man allegedly spat on a Turkish flag displayed within the hotel lobby during the dispute. Following a report filed by hotel staff, local police detained the tourist and subsequently transferred him to the Alanya courthouse for legal proceedings.
Legal Consequences and Formal Charges
The individual has been formally charged with insulting or degrading a symbol of the Turkish state. Following his appearance in court, he was remanded in custody and transferred to a local prison facility situated on the outskirts of the city. There has been no immediate comment or response from the British embassy regarding the arrest.
Under Article 300 of the Turkish penal code, public disrespect toward the national flag is classified as a criminal offence. Convictions under this statute can result in prison sentences of up to three years. The legal system in Turkey maintains strict regulations regarding the treatment of state symbols, and authorities have previously pursued investigations into foreigners accused of similar acts of disrespect.
In a separate incident reported in August 2025, prosecutors initiated a criminal investigation involving a foreign tourist who allegedly performed a pole dance on a flagpole in the Cappadocia region. That case drew attention after footage of the act was shared on social media, though the final outcome of those proceedings remains unclear.
