Algeria Severs Diplomatic Ties with UAE and Closes Airspace

Algeria has officially severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing what it described as a series of provocative and hostile actions by the Gulf nation. The decision, announced on Thursday, marks the culmination of years of escalating friction between the two countries, leading to the immediate expulsion of the Emirati ambassador, who has been given 48 hours to leave the country.

In conjunction with the diplomatic break, the Algerian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the country’s airspace is now closed to all Emirati-registered civilian and military aircraft. While the ban takes effect on Friday, the government has granted a temporary exemption for commercial flights operating to and from Algiers airport, which will be permitted to continue until the end of 2026.

Diplomatic Tensions and Regional Allegations

The Algerian foreign ministry stated that the decision followed exhaustive efforts to resolve bilateral disputes, noting that previous warnings issued to Abu Dhabi regarding its conduct had been ignored. Officials in Algiers characterized the UAE’s actions as intolerable, asserting that the country had reached a point where it could no longer maintain formal ties.
