The incident occurred on the B981 road in Cluny, Fife, on the evening of December 19 of last year. Hynd, who previously taught computer animation at Fife College, had been traveling home following a staff Christmas event. The collision involved her Nissan Qashqai and a Volkswagen Polo occupied by the victims and their two children.
Details of the Collision and Legal Proceedings
The court heard that Hynd had consumed a variety of alcoholic beverages during a lunch and social gathering held on the final day of the college term. Witnesses reported seeing her vehicle swerving and crossing into the path of oncoming traffic before the collision took place. Other motorists who observed the erratic driving contacted emergency services and attempted to provide assistance at the scene.
Police officers who arrived at the location noted that Hynd smelled of alcohol and appeared unaware that a crash had occurred. Jatinder Kaur, who was driving the family vehicle, died at the scene. Her husband, Satwant Singh, was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries two days later. The couple’s 19-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son, who were passengers in the vehicle, were also injured in the crash.
Impact on the Family and Judicial Response
The victims were well-known in their community as the operators of a local grocery store in Kirkcaldy. In a statement released following the court proceedings, the family expressed the profound difficulty of navigating life without their parents, highlighting the support and love they provided. The family noted that the absence of their parents during future milestones remains a significant source of grief.
During the hearing, Judge Michael O’Grady KC described the offense as a matter of extreme gravity, noting the permanent loss inflicted upon the surviving family members. Hynd’s legal representative, Ewen Roy, stated that his client is deeply affected by the consequences of her actions and fully acknowledges the devastation caused. Following the admission of guilt, Hynd was remanded in custody. The case is scheduled to return to court in October for further proceedings.
