US-Based Couple Alleges Data Misuse at Delhi Airport Duty-Free Shop

A United States-based couple has publicly raised concerns regarding data collection practices at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, alleging that duty-free staff scanned the passports of their entire family during a routine transaction. The incident, which has gained attention online, involved the couple and their two young children after they arrived at Terminal 3.

Pooja Tomarr Sikarwar, who documented the experience in a video shared on social media, stated that she had purchased a bottle of liquor at a duty-free shop shortly after clearing immigration. While the transaction involved only one adult, she claimed that staff proceeded to scan the passports of her husband and their two children, including a nine-month-old infant. When questioned about the necessity of scanning the entire family's travel documents, staff reportedly claimed the procedure was required to check for promotional offers.

Concerns Over Data Privacy and Potential Misuse

The couple expressed significant apprehension regarding the security of their personal information and the potential for unauthorized use of their data. In the video, Sikarwar’s husband questioned whether the practice could be linked to illicit activities, such as smuggling goods out of the airport under the names of passengers who had not made purchases. He further suggested that the collection of passport details from non-purchasing family members could constitute an unauthorized gathering of personal data.
