Indian expatriate in US contrasts professional growth and career struggles

A social media post by an Indian expatriate living in the United States has sparked a conversation regarding the differences in professional development and career satisfaction between the two nations. Kartik Chauhan, who relocated to the U.S. after pursuing a career in hotel management, detailed his transition from a period of academic frustration to finding success in the American workforce.

Chauhan’s account highlights the intense pressure often associated with competitive examinations in India, such as the JEE, NEET, and UPSC. He noted that he initially entered this academic environment due to peer influence, but faced repeated failures that led to significant personal frustration and financial anxiety. According to Chauhan, the pressure to support his family and improve their living conditions contributed to a period of deep uncertainty before he ultimately decided to pivot toward a different career trajectory.

Transitioning to a new career path

After stepping away from the competitive exam circuit, Chauhan pursued a degree in hotel management. He subsequently spent three years working as a pastry chef at a Marriott hotel, an experience that eventually provided him with the opportunity to move to the United States. In his reflection, he acknowledged that the nature of hard work and struggle is universal, regardless of the country.
