An Italian woman from Bitonto, located in the southern Puglia region, has experienced a remarkable turn of events after mistakenly discarding her winning lottery ticket worth €1 million (approximately $1.1 million). The ticket was recovered from over six tons of waste by dedicated sanitation workers from the public waste management company SANB, who spent more than a day meticulously searching through the refuse.
Misunderstanding Leads to a Discarded Fortune
The incident unfolded when the woman visited a local lottery retailer to check her instant-win ticket. Upon checking, the terminal displayed a "non-payable" message, which she misinterpreted as an indication that her ticket had not won anything. In reality, this message meant that the retailer was not authorized to pay out such a large prize. Believing her ticket was worthless, she discarded it before leaving the shop.
It was only after returning home that a family member informed her that the numbers she regularly played had indeed won the €1 million jackpot. These numbers held sentimental value for her, as they were associated with a loved one. Realizing her mistake, she rushed back to the retailer, only to find that the garbage had already been collected.
Sanitation Workers' Determined Search
Desperate to recover her ticket, the woman contacted SANB, hoping for a miracle. Although the chances seemed slim, the waste management team quickly reconstructed the route of the garbage truck and identified the correct vehicle before its contents were processed. Due to the potential presence of hazardous materials, the truck was taken to a specialized facility where workers could safely conduct the search.
After an exhaustive effort that involved sorting through more than six tons of rubbish, the workers discovered several discarded lottery tickets and stubs. Ultimately, they located the winning ticket, which SANB administrator Roberto Nicola Toscano described as "miraculously still in one piece." This diligent search ensured that the woman's life-changing prize was not lost forever.
A Joyful Reunion with the Prize
When informed of the ticket's recovery, the woman was overwhelmed with emotion, reportedly breaking down in tears. Toscano recounted that he would have embraced her had they not been communicating over the phone. The recovered ticket allowed her to claim her €1 million prize, despite the earlier mishap.
To cover the additional costs incurred during the recovery operation, the woman signed an agreement with SANB, ensuring that taxpayers would not bear the financial burden. Given the substantial value of the jackpot, the effort proved to be well worth it.
